Mescalero Tribal Fish Hatchery

Purpose

Providing trout to Laguna Pueblo, Sandia Pueblo, Isleta Pueblo, OhKay Owingue, Jicarilla Apache Nation, Picuris Pueblo, Acoma Pueblo, Cochiti Pueblo in support of their rearing and recreational fishing programs. Waters stocked on the Mescalero Apache Reservation include the Silver Lakes Recreation Area ,, the Eagle Creek Recreation Area, and the Rio Ruidoso Campgrounds. In addition, it supplies trout to Mescalero Lake located at the Inn of the Mountain Gods.

The hatchery also operates a Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout Program, holding a purestrain broodstock of the Pecos Strain of this rare sub-species. These fish are stocked in headwater streams within their historic range across the Sacramento Mountains both on and off the Reservation.

The fisheries department works closely with the Mescalero Apache Schools to provide work experience for Tribal youth interested in pursuing careers in natural resources.

The hatchery also operates a program of instruction inviting fisheries staff from Tribes, Pueblo, and Indian Nations to train here at the hatchery.(Link)
